Ford has ended its hybrid partnership with Toyota and plans to build its own new rear-wheel-drive hybrid system for pickup trucks and SUVs, reports Detroit Free Press.
In 2011, the two companies announced that they would jointly develop a rear-wheel-drive hybrid system for an all-new vehicle architecture and would “individually integrate the system in their own vehicles,” the newspaper reports, citing a statement at the time.
The companies now ended their partnership as they “are increasingly competing with each other for hybrid buyers.”
Ford is expected to develop its own hybrid system by the end of the decade.
Ford’s new hybrid system would go on sale by 2020.
