The Lexus GX line up of SUVs is currently a rare breed as like its larger LX brother, it rides a truck based, body-on-frame chassis. It may be bathed in luxury and technology, but underneath all that leather and navigation is a design that is more akin to a 70’s American muscle car than a modern-day premium hauler. Despite its on-paper old schoolary, the GX just so happens to be one of the most capable luxury SUVs on the market and can go places the majority of its competition wouldn’t even think about. Even still, more comfort could always been found and for that reason, Lexus might be looking to make the GX a unibody vehicle for its next generation.
According to a Ward’s Auto article and interview, the folks at Lexus are seriously considering a car-based SUV as the next GX model or replacement. With its main competitors from GM, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Acura and Infiniti all using unibody constructions, the Lexus is currently the odd man out. Whether or not Lexus follows suit is currently up to time to tell but if it does happen, there is a slight concern that the other car-based SUV, the RX, might be challenged by an inside player. The folks at Toyota’s premium division are also rather pleased with how their GX turned out, especially considering that underneath is a modified Tacoma pickup truck.
