For the most part, Australian gearheads are split into two institutions: Ford and GM’s Holden. For ages, a battle between the two has raged on on the curvy and dangerous down under race tracks under the guise of the V8 Supercar series. The race wars are similar to NASCAR but with more down force, the use of brakes, right turns and has been fought between the Holden HSV Commodore and Ford Performance Vehicle Falcon for ages. Things might soon change as there have been rumors of one more challenger entering the series: Chrysler.
At the moment, the rumors of a rear drive, Mopar monster running down the hills of Bathurst are just that: rumors. According to the Age, an Australian publication, Chrysler’s head gearhead, Ralph Gilles, “likes the idea.” Chrysler has a market in Australia, albeit not as large as Ford or GM, and offers the 300C sedan which competes with the road Falcons and Commodores. The kick is that the V8 Supercar series racers are funded independently with a budget of close to $10 million. A factory-backed team would not be likely even though Chrysler did offer a 300C SRT8 as an official pace car a few years back. If it does happen, the already crowded supercar races will simply have one more high-powered sedan to rub fenders with.
