Common Fibers is a new startup that is looking to take the science and beauty of carbon fiber and inject into our lives. After all, if its good enough to build lighter, faster and stronger supercars, why can’t it be used to make the rest of our lives better? The company’s first product is a carbon fiber wallet, but it’s a bit different from the various other carbon fiber wallets on the market.
The most noticeable difference with this wallet comes in the form of its flexible carbon fiber hinge. Common Fibers actually has a patent on the design, so don’t expect to see this flexible carbon pivot point on any of its competitors any time soon. The second way the company differentiates itself is through the use of varying carbon weaves. While they do offer the standard cross weave that carbon fiber is traditionally seen with, Common Fibers has created a wave pattern that looks like interlocking diamonds, and then there is the “track” design that almost an odd plaid design created from stripes, squares and octagons.
The company sells the wallet in two sizes, each with multiple versions and price points. The cheapest model starts at $60 with the most expensive model ringing in at $100.
Beyond the wallets, Common Fibers makes a few other additional accessories like a carbon fiber bottle opener that will fit in any credit card slot, and even guitar picks. I had a chance to talk with company co-founder Myles Bradwell, and they have lots of plans for future products that can range from the simple to the complex. He was coy about exactly what they are planning, but he made no attempt the fact that the products will be ambitious for a company of his size.
