Chrysler LLC’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant will soon have an all-new body shop courtesy of a string of investments. The most recent, a $165 million plunge made by Chrysler, will create the one million square foot addition. Built in 1953, the plant has had a rather colorful history, once being owned by Volkswagen in the 1980s. Since their buy-out in 1983, Chrysler has been building most of its midsize sedans and coupes at the Michigan plant. Currently, the 200 sedan and convertible as well as the Avenger are being manufactured at Sterling Heights, which most recently received a new paint shop.
“Today marks another milestone in the rags to riches story of the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant,” said Scott Garberding, Senior Vice President and Head of Manufacturing, Chrysler Group LLC. “A plant that was slated to close nearly two years ago will now be a state-of-the-art facility that will play an integral role in the success of this company by building the next generation of all-new vehicles.” The latest investment will produce both the body shop facility and all the equipment to fill it with. The new addition adds to the recent generosity towards Chrysler U.S. facilities; bring the total investments to nearly $3.5 billion since 2009.
