It is official: when the 2013 model year comes around, the supercar world will be once again scared of Detroit. The brutal and record killer monster known as the Viper will be making its return and Chrysler LLC is getting ready. The former home of the snake, the Connor Avenue Assembly Plant, will reopen for the upcoming production the 2013 SRT Viper and nearly 150 jobs will return to Detroit. The plant has been idle since the Viper bowed its monstrous head in 2010 but starting late 2012, that will change.
“The next generation Viper will make its return to the product lineup in late 2012 as a 2013 model,” said Ralph Gilles, President and Chief Executive Officer for SRT Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. “We’re extremely excited that our ultimate American sports car will continue to live on and be produced exclusively here in the Motor City.” The World Class Manufacturing system will be implemented by Connor to get ready for the restart. Focus will be placed on reducing waste and increasing productivity and overall quality. In the past, the plant rolled out an average of 12 Vipers a day due to car being hand-built. During its 15 years of operation since it took over the car’s production in 1995, Connor has pieced together 22,070 V10-powered track stars. Hopefully, they haven’t forgotten what made the previous cars so special and that same brutal but charming character will be found in 2013.
