As a result of problems that could end in vehicle fires, Chevrolet will be issuing two separate voluntary recalls on the Cruze compact. The potential outcomes may be the same, but culprits are different as one is the car’s fuel tank while the other is its engine shield. On certain vehicles, the fuel tank strap secondary bracket may not have been properly welded and thus, the tank could come loose in the event of an accident. Unrelated, the Cruze may be at risk because of its engine shield that could collect excess amounts of oil resulting in a potential engine fire.
In total, approximately 470,000 Cruze models are being recalled. All affected cars are 2011 through 2012 model years built between October 2, 2009 through May 14 (fuel tank) and May 31 (engine shield), 2012. So far, 53,239 Chevrolets are being investigated for the potential fuel tank issue and customers should be notified of the problem on or around July 11, 2012. To fix the risk, certified dealers will inspect the cars for missing welds and if needed, proper fasteners will be added.
The same dealers will also be responsible for fixing the approximately 413,148 vehicles in danger due to engine shields. That recall is expected to begin on or around July 11 as well and will be remedied by modifying the component. On Cruze models fitted with a manual transmission, a protective tape will be added to electronic power steering wiring harness. Both repairs will be conducted at no extra cost to owners.
