Undercutting the already small Chevrolet Sonic, the micro-sized city car with the bow tie badge, the Spark, will soon enter its next generation. Set to debut April 2 at both the Seoul and New York auto shows, the 2016 Chevy Spark will adopt a sleeker, more aerodynamic body with a more sophisticated mannerism all around. Judging from the stealthy image released, the new Spark will mimic the flat grill front end of its larger brother, the Sonic, which should make it more appealing in the U.S. market.
Based off GM’s Korean market minicar, the Daewoo Matiz, the Chevrolet Spark is sold globally under a handful of different names including the Beat in India and Australia’s Holden Barina Spark. Having been around, in essence, since 1997, the Spark made its way to the U.S. in 2013. According to GM, the car’s current generation, launched in 2009 to the Indian market, has sold more than 1 million units and is available in 71 different markets worldwide.
“The youthful whimsy of the original Spark is still in its genes, but it is conveyed in more traditional proportions that reinforce the customer’s refined expectations,” said Michael Simcoe, GM International vice president of Design, referencing the upcoming 2016 Spark. Details on specifications have yet to be revealed but surly, more will arrive come April 2.
