Joining the upcoming Malibu lineup will be the eAssisted Eco trim level. Using the same electric/gas powertrain found on both the Buick Regal and LaCrosse eAssist, the Eco will be priced lower than comparable, full-blown hybrids but looks to deliver similar fuel economy numbers. General Motors estimates the car to average 26 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. Even though it uses a lithium-ion battery to boost power and offers regenerative braking and start/stop feature, the Malibu Eco isn’t an all-out hybrid. Partly because of that, Chevrolet has priced the 2013 model year car at $25,995; undercutting all of its major, hybrid competition.

Under the hood of the Eco will be GM’s latest Ecotec DOHC 2.4 liter inline four cylinder. Using direct injection and variable valve timing, the Eco puts down a solid 182 horsepower through a six speed automatic and front wheel drive. Lightweight components such as an all aluminum engine, hood and rear bumper beam as well as low-mass interior carpeting and trim help the Eco save nearly 130 pounds compared to the standard Malibu. When the it hits showroom floors late 2012, it will be the first of the new line of Malibu cars. Standard equipment will include Chevrolet’s MyLink media system, a seven inch touchscreen display, bluetooth connection, OnStar and tire pressure monitoring system. Items such as backup camera, navigation, power seating, leather and a Pinoneer-sourced stereo will be offered as added-cost options.
