The prestigious Barrett-Jackson auction is not only home to countless hours of entertainment but some of the most historically important vehicles of our time. Changing hands on a weekly basis are cars and trucks that can set back a new owner hundreds of thousands of dollars and create history in the process. For instance, the first public offering of Chevrolet’s latest and fastest production Camaro, the 2012 ZL1, was recently auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson. The final bid and thus final price tag: $250,000.

The ZL1, a Carbon Flash Metallic model, is the 69th built by the Oshawa, Canada plant and the first one offered to the public. The winning bid went to Rick Hendrick, who owns and runs Hendrick Motorsports and Hendrick Automotive Group. The car was supplied to Barrett-Jackson by Fairway Chevrolet-Buick-GMC in Las Vegas and 100 percent of the proceeds went to the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

“Offering the 69th Camaro ZL1 at auction was a fitting tribute to the 1969 model, and a great way to benefit such a worthy cause as the YMCA.” $250,000 maybe much more than the ZL1’s MSRP, but it can run with cars that do cost that much from the factory. 580 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque is available from its 6.2 liter supercharged LSA V8. Power adjustable magnetic dampers also make sure that all of that thrust stays in relative order.
