Ever since the Z/28 was announced, and the world got word of the eye-watering $72,000 price tag, lots of current Camaro SS buyers have wondered if they could convert to a Z/28 for cheaper. Well thanks to some footwork by the good guys over at NewGMParts.com, we have the answer. In short, yes, you can convert to a Z/28 with all stock parts. If you don’t count the hundreds of man hours of labor it would take to make the conversion happen, its also cheaper; by about ten grand.
Now lets start with some caveats here. An SS converted to a Z/28 will not be as fast as a factory Z/28. Chevrolet stripped a lot of weight out of the Camaro with reduced sound dampening, AC removal and a gutted stereo system with only one speaker, and there are lots of small changes under the skin that make the car what it is. The Z/28 is essentially closer to a racecar than it is a road car.
That said, if you want all same go-faster bits, including the wicked good-looking body kit stuff, you can make it happen. The cost for all the parts you need is $28,019.02. In other words, it will cost you a second Camaro. If you just want looks and no speed, you can make that happen to, and that will only cost you $1600.
But don’t do that. Nobody likes a car that is all show and no go.
