Back in September 2011, two Buick engineers took the high-output 2012 Regal GS and bombed down the scorched earth known as the Nevada State Highway 318. Entered in the Silver State Classic Challenge’s 120 mph class, the super sedan managed to not only take first place but that event earned the car its first ever official racing victory. For the May 2012 event, known as the Nevada Open Road Challenge, the same two men, Bill Rietow and John Townsend, will pilot the same car to defend their pervious victory but this time, the trail may prove more difficult.
“We learned a lot about the intricacies of the course on our first time out” said Bill Rietow, GS lead development engineer. Along with powertrain engineer and navigator Townsend, the Buick team will govern a mechanically stock and factory fresh 2012 Regal GS with only safety modifications such as roll hoop and five-point harnesses. Unlike last year, the 270 horsepower turbocharged sedan will compete in the more demanding 135 mph class meaning that across the 90 mile long course, Rietow and Townsend must average closest to that speed.
This is another great opportunity to showcase the GS and its comfort and capability at real-world condition high speeds,” Rietow said. “Stability, body control and durability are all being tested to extremes.” Last year, the Regal managed to finish the course closest to the 120 mph class time of 45 minutes. This year’s event will take place on May 20.
