BMW has updated the engines in the 2 Series for 2017. New engines mean new names, and once again the BMW lineup has become even more confusing. Hooray. Starting at the bottom of the lineup, the 228i becomes the 230i and the M235i morphs into the M240i. The 230i makes slightly more power with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder. A jump of just eight horsepower and three lb-ft. The more powerful M240i sees power jump to 335hp and 369 lb-ft out of its new 3.0-liter straight-six. That’s a bump of 15 hp and 39 pounds of twist. They both can be had with either a new six-speed manual with rev matching, or a new eight-speed automatic with launch control.
The M240i can now hit 60 in 4.2 seconds when equipped with the xDrive all-wheel drive system and the automatic transmission. Without the all-wheel drive and a manual, it’s going to be 4.6 seconds.
Besides the engines, other upgrades to the new 2 Series models include an M Sport suspension that is 10mm lower, 18-inch M-light alloy wheels, and the new M240i is rocking Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. 2017 also sees a new M Sport braking system, and an aerodynamics package.
So, to recap, BMW has just updated the 228i and is now calling it the 230i. They’ve then updated and renamed the 235i to the 240i. Confused yet? I don’t get it either, but oh well, that doesn’t matter if it helps sales.
