A voluntary recall will take place so BMW can further investigate a potential issue with some of its X5 SUVs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem lies within the vehicle’s automatic transmission and its parking lock mechanism. Because of a “manufacturing error”, the transmission may not activate its brake lock even when placed in Park. This could cause the vehicle to simply roll away after being told to stay still.

The very select grouping of X5s being recalled are all 2012 model years with the turbocharged 3.5 liter engine. If manufactured from December 19 through December 21, 2011, a BMW utility could be at risk. As of now, there are only six total vehicles being investigated and notification to owners is expected to begin by the end of this January. The remedy will take place at certified dealers and free of charger to drivers but won’t be easy. BMW is going to replace the entire transmission in order to solve the issue.
