A variety of BMW executive sedans and coupes will soon be recalled for the same problem. On certain 5 and 6 Series models, the trunk mounted battery may not have been installed correctly at the positive cable connection. There is a chance that through the course of time and driving, the insulated bulkhead connector can loosen which would lead to an increase in electrical resistance. If this happens, the loose bolt can cause the battery system to overheat, even while sitting still and ultimately end in a vehicle fire.
The recall is expected to begin during April 2012 but until then, BMW doesn’t want to take any chances. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker is asking owners to park their sedans and coupes outside until the fix has been made. So far, a potential 367,682 vehicles are at risk including 2004 through 2010 5-Series and 6-Series models. Also affected are 2006 through 2010 M5 super sedans as well as 2007 through 2010 M6 hot-rod coupes. In order to remedy the problem, BMW will inspect and secure the battery bolt cable connection and do so at no extra cost to owners.
