A recall is underway for certain North American BMWs fitted with the newly turbocharged V8 or V12. The issue revolves around the vehicle’s electric auxiliary water pump and its circuit board. The potential for overheating is high which could cause the pump and or the engine compartment to smolder. Ultimately, the problem could lead to an entire vehicle fire.

The recall is affecting the twin turbocharged V8 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, X5 and X6 as well as the twin turbo V12 7-Series. Model years for all at-risk vehicles are between 2008 and 2011. BMW will begin notifying owners early in November and will remedy the issue by replacing the auxiliary water pump free of charge. According to the NHTSA notice, as of now 32,084 BMWs are included in the recall.
