BMW has announced a recall for roughly 220,000 vehicles worldwide due to an issue with the passenger airbag deployment.

In 2002 and 2003 BMW 3-Serise sedans, wagons, convertibles – along with the M3 coupe and convertible – the front passenger airbag may not inflate correctly because of a manufacturing defect in the propellant used to inflate the airbag.

Although no injuries have been reported, the improper inflation of the airbag may result in the risk of fires or metal fragments shooting up towards the windshield or down into the passenger foot well.

The estimated number of 3-Series vehicles inside the United States effected by the recall is around 42,080.

This isn’t the only recall on airbags in recent history. BMW’s airbag supplier, Takata Corp., is also the supplier for Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Mazda. Those four companies held recalls for airbags in a total of 1.3 million effected vehicles last month. Takata is the world’s second largest manufacturer of airbags and seatbelts.
