BlackBerry has unveiled a new Software Update Management for Automotive system.

The new system is designed for automakers to manage and deliver “over-the-air” software updates to vehicles.

The new system facilitates machine-to-machine communication directly between the automaker and the vehicle, allowing the automaker to easily provide software updates to vehicles in the field, said Steve West, senior director of product management mobile computing at BlackBerry.

“The secure system could allow automakers to update everything from infotainment devices to powertrain systems. It would mean less time at the dealership for customers and an instant way for automakers to update vehicles, possibly saving millions, if not billions, on services and warranties. It also has the ability to get the status of functional systems in a vehicle,” West added.
