Corporate engines are widely used for a reason: they work. Powering a total of five Audi vehicles is the still-young 3.0 liter TFSI supercharged V6 which recently was acknowledged by Ward’s Auto for being one of the 10 best engines of 2012. Featuring many engineering traits that grab the attention of the Ward’s editors, Audi’s latest corporate block uses gasoline direct injection in tandem with a four vane Roots-type supercharger. Questionably rated at 310 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, the V6 can get most of its vehicles to 60 mph in around 5 seconds or less. It does this while achieving rather high fuel economy: an 2012 Audi A7 we tested earlier in the year returned 28 mpg.
Ward’s was impressed by the TFSI for its smooth power delivery and versatile nature. Not only does it liven up the 2012 A6 and Q7, but it manages to boost efficiency in Porsche and VW’s hybrid SUVs. In the 18 editions of the Ward’s 10 Best Engines List, Audi’s supercharged block has earned a spot a total of three times: all of which consecutive. Now if Audi would only admit to it being underrated.
