Audi has made quite a name for itself when it comes to high powered diesels. The company has been fielding a team of nigh unstoppable diesel cars around Le Mans for years, and now it seems that tech may finally make it to the street.
There have been rumblings for a few months that Audi is working to build a car that will challenge the new breed of ultra exotics like the Ferrari F70 and McLaren P1. Auto Express claims that we will see carbon fiber structures, 700 horsepower and a 200+ mph top speed, all from an oil burning engine.
Automobile has provided more fuel for the fire and is claiming that the car will be dramatically different from the R8 and possibly carry the R20 moniker. The design is said to be that of “street-legal LeMans racer” with tons of fins, flaps and wings. More speculation about the drivetrain has become a 550 hp twin-turbo diesel V6 sending power to the rear wheels, while a pair of 75 hp electric motors can be found behind the front wheels.
If Automobile’s sources are correct, we should see the new car bow at Pebble Beach in 2015. Rest assured, we will update the site with all the news we can get on this potential world-beating hyper car.
