Audi believes they know what Americans wants – a fast crossover. Apparently, they also know what we don’t want – a fast crossover with a diesel. So to that effect, Audi brings the 2014 SQ5 stateside for the first time, but with a gasoline engine. The SQ5 name is not new, mind you; it’s available in other world markets with a diesel as a 2013 model.
For reasons like emissions standards and marketability concerns, Audi replaces the diesel with a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 for the U.S. That power plant is good for 354 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque and propels the sporty crossover from 0-62 mph in a very respectable 5.3 seconds. Power is sent to all four wheels via Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel-drive system through an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The SQ5 is differentiated from its lesser Q5 siblings with a slightly reworked front fascia with cues from other S-line models, a rear spoiler, large quad exhaust tips, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and some aluminum bits inside the cabin for added effect.
Adding to the exterior sportiness are huge black calipers scribed with SQ5 peaking through beautiful 20-inch double-spoke wheels wrapped in 255/45-series rubber. 21-inch wheels are optional. The exterior mirrors also get a sporty touch with a matte aluminum finish that contrasts the optional body colors.
Look for the SQ5 to arrive at Audi dealerships in the third quarter of 2013. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced, but we suspect the SQ5 will sell fairly well despite the inevitable extra charge over the 2013 Q5 3.0’s $43,900 base price.
