GM made the big jump to include Android Auto capability in several of its upcoming 2016 Chevy models, but GMC got left out in the cold on the new technology. When March rolls around, that will change for buyers of the 2016 Canyon, Sierra and Yukon. All Yukon, Sierra and Canyon trucks that are equipped with the eight-inch IntelliLink system can head to the dealer in March and get a free upgrade that will enable Android Auto.
Apple’s CarPlay software is already included on these trucks, but with almost half of the smartphone market on Android, it’s great to see GMC stepping up to provide the functionality free of charge. There are a few caveats to using the new software though, as you will need a newer Android phone. Whatever phone you are using, it must be running Android Lollipop or later. Lollipop is version 5.0 of Android, so just jump into your phone’s settings, and check out the software information page to see what version you have. Anything 5.0 and above and you are ready to use Android Auto.
