About 40 to 50 years ago, the SUV was just a thought and the minivan didn’t even exist. Instead, American families got around in a now sick breed of car: the station wagon. It seems today that the estate version of sedans are hardly seen in the U.S. and pretty soon, there will be one less on the road. Volkswagen recently released the next version of the Passat Wagon but has announced (telling Car and Driver Magazine) that they will not send it to the United States. This mainly due to poor sales of wagons but it’s also due to Volkswagen wanting to reposition the U.S. Passat, as its price recently dropped $8,000.
Volkswagen is also working on a three row crossover to compete with the likes of the Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer. That is a segment that other VW SUVs can’t fit in as the Tiguan is too small and the Touareg is too expensive. And with wagons only being a niche group in the U.S., it makes sense for VW to simply give up and start over.
