In 2003 Alfa Romeo stunned the world with a wild concept coupe they called the 8C Competizione. It was a design homage to the legendary Alfas of the 1950s, but it was powered by the heart of a modern supercar. A few years late in 2007, the car was on sale, barely changed from its beautiful concept form. The car’s body is formed completely from carbon fiber, and it the machine is assembled in the Maserati factory in Italy.
Under that swoopy hood you will find a 4.7-liter V8 from the Maserati Gran Turismo, which is built by Ferrari, and it produces 44 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The 0-60 run is completed in just over 4 seconds, and top speed more than 180 mph. The only real downside to the drivetrain is that it only came with an automated transmission, and it’s not a fancy dual-clutch one either. It was easily the weakest part of the car in terms of feel or dynamics.
But performance doesn’t really matter when it comes to the Alfa 8C. This car was developed using styling cues from the golden-era of the automobile, and the result is a shape that is timeless and achingly beautiful. The smooth arches of the fenders, rounded greenhouse and classic sports car stance all add together to create machine that looks like a piece of art.
It is that look alone that makes the Alfa 8C Competizione worthy of #SupercarSunday.
