Before, during and slightly after the muscle car era of the 1960s, it was more uncommon to not see a big, V8 powered, rear wheel drive Chevrolet prowling the streets of America. Fast forward to today however and you would be hard pressed to find a legitimate bowtied “SS” blow by you on public pavement. Those two duplicate letters may still be a GM legend, but the true fruit of the Chevrolet namesake hasn’t been around for years as recently, high output four cylinder compacts and reborn pony cars have enjoyed the SS treatment. Fans of thumping, V8 tire roasting power shouldn’t give up hope just yet as Chevrolet recently announced that a rear drive, performance sedan will make its return fairly soon.

Still in heavy development form, the vehicle should mark its debut next year. It will come in two forms: street and NASCAR ready battle mode. Currently named “SS”, the hot-rod will first see duty as a 2013 Sprint Cup racecar and will rub fenders with the rest of the Big Three at the upcoming Daytona 500. Later in 2013, the production version will hit dealership floors as limited run , 2014 model year performance sedan.

Like times past, the production SS will be based on previously existing monster from down under. The same global, rear drive platform that supports the Chevrolet Camaro and Australian Commodore will be the basis for the 2014 sedan. What will be found under the hood and its overall shape, size and cost has yet to be official but what is for certain, is the true V8 muscle car is coming back to where it belongs: on American soil.
