Since the reform and opening up to the outside world, multinational automotive companies have come into China market, setting up joint ventures and introducing advanced technology and management philosophy. Thanks to the technological innovation, recent years have witnessed the rise of Chinese local independent automakers in a very short period of time. With the soaring economy in the most populous country in the world, China is welcoming a hot and prosperous automobile consumption market. In 2006, China became the 2nd largest automotive market and the 3rd largest automobile manufacturing country in the world. In the first quarter of 2009, the sales and output of vehicle volume reached 2.68 and 2.56 million units, up 1.91 and 3.88 percent respectively year-on-year. China is expected to become the largest auto manufacturing and consuming country very soon. As one of the most important emerging markets, China has been proved to be the most dynamic market in the world.
Auto China, which is held once every other year, attracts high attention from the industry, media and the public. Positioned as a perfect stage to demonstrate corporate image, promote products and brands, display high technology and exchange information, the bi-annual event has already become one of the most important automobile exhibitions in China.
With a 20,000-square-meter display area, the first Auto China, held in 1990, attracted 372 exhibitors and 273 vehicles from 17 countries and regions. A total of 100,000 people visited the show.
Auto China 2004, for the first time, saw world premiere vehicles in Beijing from multinational OEMs. The show was also listed as one of the A-class auto shows that multinational automakers will attend.
Auto China 2008, or the 10th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition created many records: for the first time, the exhibition was held in new China International Exhibition Center, which covers 180,000 square meters; The total audience reached 680,000 person-times, including 30,000 visitors from abroad; 2,100 exhibitors from 18 countries and regions took part in the exhibition, including 225 from overseas; 10,120 reporters from home and abroad reported the event; 890 vehicles, including 55 concepts and 7 world debuts vehicles from multinational automakers were displayed. Auto China 2008 was highly praised in terms of its exhibition service, equipments, security and ticket management etc., and was listed as one of top A-class auto events by media and professionals.
Located in Shunyi, the New China International Exhibition Center has held over 10 major exhibitions in 2008, each covering over 100,000 square meters. To provide a better service, Beijing municipal government has invested ¥600 million on transportation upgrade, building parking lots and environment protection. Famous fast food restaurants and hotels around the show facility can provide a high quality service to exhibitors and visitors.
The global financial crisis started late last year has affected all the industries all over the world. As a pillar industry, automobile industry has been damaged to a large extent. To revitalize China auto industry, Chinese central government has issued Automotive Industry Readjustment and Revitalization Plan to boost auto sales and maintain economic growth. The stimulus package includes the establishment of new fuel tax, reduction of vehicle purchase tax, selling vehicle to vast rural areas, promotion of fuel efficient and new energy vehicles, restructuring development of urban road traffic system, and standardizing second-hand vehicle market etc.
The crisis, on the other hand, provides a good opportunity for Chinese automakers to upgrade industry structure and strengthen core competence. With a strong confidence,, Chinese auto industry can contribute a lot to the economic recovery in China.
Auto China 2010 will be a good platform for OEMs and suppliers at home and abroad to communicate and expand co-operations in the largest emerging auto market.
