Amongst all of the sports cars produced over the last two decades, one has stood proud and tall as the definitive answer on what a sports car should be. A small, nimble roadster capable of conquering the world has risen as the best-selling sports cars on the planet. The answer is the MX-5 Miata, and after four generations and 26 years, Mazda has just announced that is has produced a staggering one-million of them.
Little did they know back in 1989 with the first generation that the car would be such a hit. At any given time you can find more Miata’s on a racetrack than any other car produced. In fact the cars are so good that between Scott and myself here at AutoTalk, we’ve collectively owned six of them!
The 1-millionth Miata is a Japanese spec 1.5 Liter soft top car, and as a way of expressing thanks to owners and fans worldwide, the car will begin a tour on May third. Starting with the Hiroshima Flower Festival where the car was produced, and ending here in the US with the “Miata’s at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca” event.
Mazda takes pride in the driving experience of their cars and the Miata is a strong testament to that. Driving matters and we’re excited to see what the future holds in store for one of our favorite cars.
