Every once in a while a car pops up and you think to yourself “I must be dreaming.” One of those cars just appeared, in all of its breathtaking glory. It’s a 1973 Porsche 917/30 and only six of them exist. If you happen to have five to seven million dollars sitting around, you need to make your way to Amelia Island and purchase this piece of world racing history at the auction being held on Friday.
While this specific chassis was never raced, it is identical to the car that Mark Donohue piloted in the 1973 Can-Am Championship. A 5.4-liter turbocharged flat-12 rockets you down the road with a mind boggling 1100 horsepower. The car is often described as one of the most powerful and successful cars ever created, and it’s hard to argue with that description. It dominated every single race but one during the 1973 championship series. The SCCA imposed fuel limits for the following year, forcing Porsche and McLaren to retire from the series all together. But the 917/30 left its mark and will forever be recognized by the world as one of Porsche’s greatest creations.
