In 2009, Ford Motor Company unveiled an engine moniker and philosophy that would change the brand for the better. Named the EcoBoost and initially placed within the Taurus SHO, the direct injected twin turbo 3.5 liter V6 made 365 hp and turned the rather large, family sedan into a performance headliner. Soon after, the pairing of direct injection with turbocharging was finding its way into 2.0 liter four cylinders, pickup trucks, SUVs, and more with Ford now celebrating a milestone with its five millionth EcoBoost equipped vehicle produced.
Since its launch more than five years ago, the EcoBoost, or any modern Ford engine with turbocharging and direct injection, is being built at a rate of 200,000 per month. Manufactured worldwide, the five millionth unit was finalized in Wayne, Michigan and took the form of the very unique 1.0 liter three cylinder that has earned Ward’s 10 Best Engines recognition twice and Engine Technology International’s International Engine of the Year award three years in a row. No other engine has ever accomplished such accolade.
It has been less than two years since Ford celebrated its two millionth EcoBoost making this milestone even more impressive. In the first full year of the engine – 2010 – Ford built just 62,704 vehicles with an EcoBoost engine and now, Americans can purchase the technology in any model available. Globally, the EcoBoost comes in 1.0 liter variety and, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.3-liter four cylinder engines as well as 2.7 and 3.5-liter V6s.
