The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed its investigation into 104,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs without seeking a recall.
In October 2013, the agency opened an investigation into the 2012 Jeep Liberty SUV assembled by Chrysler after getting a report of smoke coming from the driver’s door followed by flames, NHTSA said.
“In addition to the fire, consumers reported erratic function of the windows and door locks resulting in activation on their own while the fire was occurring,” NHTSA said.
NHTSA said its analysis shows “the overall failure rate for the (switch) which was used in a large population of vehicles, appears to be low, and the failure rate for those that resulted in fires is even lower. Additionally the data does not indicate a trend, climatic, or regional effects indicative of an actionable defect issue,” NHTSA said.
