When Cadillac announced that the 2014 ELR range-extended plug-in would cost $76,000 there were more than a few shocked faces. GM was selling what is essentially a rebadged Chevy Volt for more than the cost of a top-trim CTS sedan.
The folks from GM are quick to point out that the price drops to $68,500 after the $7500 federal tax credit, but there is no denying the price is still high.
Cadillac is now hoping to coax buyers and restore some good faith by offering a bonus item to early adopters. If you purchase a new ELR, you will also receive a 240-volt fast charger with free professional installation. The deal is only good for a limited time, but Cadillac has not stated if that is based on sales or a calendar date.
It may not be the best way to offset the price of the new ELR, but it makes the car a more enticing buy, and it gives GM a leg up in improving the charging infrastructure of our nation, even if it just one Cadillac buyer at a time.
