Honda Motor said its U.S. subsidiary has exported more American-built vehicles in 2013, compared to Japan, reports The Detroit News.
For the first time in 2013, the Japanese automaker exported more the American-built vehicles than the number of vehicles it imported from Japan.
The company said it became a net exporter in the U.S. for the first time in 2013, shipping 108,705 U.S.-made Honda and Acura vehicles versus the 88,537 it imported from Japan.
Last year, Honda’s exports were up nearly 50% over 2012 — and were five times the 19,976 that Honda exported from the U.S. in 2009.
The automaker said that last year it produced a record 1.78 million vehicles in North America, including 1.31 million made in the United States.
The company’s U.S. production was up 7.4% and it exports U.S.-built vehicles to more than 50 countries, with Saudi Arabia, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Mexico as its biggest markets.
