Auto-Talk presents a detailed step-by-step guide on how to remove a front bumper on VolksWagen Jetta GRI & Golf.
Tools Needed:
- #25 Torx Screw Driver
- #30 Torx Screw Driver
- Phillips Screw Driver
- Flat Head Screw Driver
- Drille with 11/64" or 15/64" Bit
Directions:
Step 1: Unfasten Hood Release Lever Clip:
Open the hood and locate the hood lever retaining clip. Unclip both sides and lift up (use a flat-head screwdriver or a paper clip to lift the edges).

Step 2: Widen Lever:
Using a flat-head screwdriver, widen the space between the hood lever arms by twisting the screwdriver. This will allow you the slip the hood lever off of the locking mechanism joint.

Step 3: Remove Lever:
Slide the hood lever out. Some twisting may be required.

Step 4: Remove Upper Grille:
To remove the original grille, carefully pull up and out the attachment clips. The clips near the upper radiator are tight, and may make extraction difficult. Once the upper clips are detached you can remove the entire grille from the remaining lower four attachments.

Step 5: Remove Lower Grilles:
On the lower left and right grilles there are two tabs to push down to release the grille from the bumper. On the centre grille there are three tabs to pull down to release the grille from the bumper.

Step 6: Bumper Removal:
Note: Before proceeding with the next step, make sure you have a drop cloth or towels underneath the bumper to avoid scratches if the bumper falls off. Find something to stack underneath the bumper to help support it once the Torx screws are removed (like the GrillCraft packaging).

Step 7: Bumper Removal:
Remove the 5 Torx screws in the upper grille area and the 2 Torx screws in the lower left and right grille area using the #30 Torx screwdriver.
Remove the 4 Torx screws in each of the front wheel wells using the #25 Torx screwdriver. Turn the car wheels in to get better access to the screws.

Step 8: Bumper Removal:
Slowly and carefully slide the bumper off of the car. Do not pull the bumper too far out. The side marker bulbs are still attached to the bumper. Rest the loosened bumper on the support (GrillCraft box?). Detach the side marker bulbs from the bumper by gripping the black rubber casing (there are two bumps to place your fingers on) and pullling out.
