Cadillac is upping the ante with a brand new twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 set to debut at the New York Auto Show.
Slotted for the engine bay of the new 2014 CTS, the twin-turbo makes a whopping 420 hp and 430 lb-ft. of torque – all within the 2,500-5,500 rpm range. Cadillac expects the new CTS to hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds on its way to a 170 mph top speed.
The twin-turbo is based on the current 3.6-liter V-6’s architecture with a few modifications to the block. It also boasts direct injection and variable valve timing to help make the most of the 12+ pounds of boost.
Other go-fast bits include strengthened connecting rods, a 10.2:1 compression ratio, an integrated charge air cooler, and vacuum-actuated wastegates with electronic control valves.
To help manage the newfound power, Cadillac is backing the V-6 with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. It’s said to have a tall eighth gear for low rpm highway traveling and close ratios for smooth, precise shifting under all engine loads.
The twin-turbo V-6 will also be available in the 2014 XTS. Both XTS and CTS sedans go on sale this fall.
