BMW is recalling 504,545 vehicles in United States due to battery cable connectors issue that can cause the vehicle to stall unexpectedly in case of an electrical power loss, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall includes coupes and convertibles from the 2008 to 2012 model years; 3-Series sedans, coupes, convertibles and sports wagons from 2007 to 2011 model years; and Z4 vehicles from the 2009 to 2011 model years, the German automaker said in its filing with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle,” according to the filing.

BMW said it will notify owners of the problem, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin in March 2013.
