While the mechanical makeup for the 2013 Buick Regal will remain the same, the sedan will see a shift in its standard and optional features. Perhaps most news worthy will be the change-up regarding the electric motor assist that isn’t a hybrid but instead, it’s eAssist. The system, which uses an electric generator to allow the engine to operate more efficiently, will now be a part of the standard Regal’s drivetrain. With up to 36 mpg, the base car will clearly serve the mileage duty among the sedan’s namesake.
“With eAssist, Buick is redefining what a ‘conventional powertrain’ means to customers,” said eAssist global chief engineer Stephen Poulos. By fitting a small electric generator and lithium-ion battery pack in the place of an alternator, the Regal’s 2.4 liter Ecotec can concentrate more on being an engine than supply accessory power. Combined with a start/stop feature and regenerative braking, the eAssist can allow the four cylinder to average 25 mpg in the city. “These new functions happen seamlessly, a requirement for Buick drivers who demand a refined driving experience. They’ll really only notice a difference at the pump.”
