In 2002, the automotive world was shocked, disappointed and deplored to find out that a rolling legend would be put to rest. What followed was a time period where enthusiasts around the world hoped and prayed that Nissan would finally come to their senses and bring back the famed GT-R name. After numerous teasers and “what-ifs”, the cover was finally pulled from the R35 in 2007 and since then, the hyper performance car has been breaking records and previous beliefs around the globe. While it may have the ability to defy most convictions, the GT-R may not have the brightest future in store.
Given the history of the automotive industry, each and every rumor must be taken with a grain of salt. Even still, reports from both Inside Line and Autoblog have it that Nissan isn’t entirely certain about the GT-R’s fate. The car has been on the market for five years and despite healthy boosts in power and technology, a generation change should be in the cards. According to the hot wire, Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn has yet to sign off on a “R36” or any kind of second generation GT-R. With Nissan’s recent strides in smaller, global vehicles and the upcoming revival of the Datsun name, perhaps there isn’t enough room in the automaker’s “shift” to include Godzilla. It has been noted that Ghosn wasn’t to keen about the R35 and supposedly, he only signed off on the car because he was assured it would turn a profit. That was however, just less than 6,000 units ago.
