Two icons in the business of roadsters will soon join together to c0-develop another drop-top legend. Recently announced, Mazda Motor Corporation and Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. will enter a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to manufacture and raise an all-new rear drive roadster. The car will be based on the next generation MX-5 architecture but a special split will be created so that both the Mazda and Fiat/Alfa-Romeo variant will carry their individual charm.

“By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition,” said Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne. The vehicle will sold under both the Mazda and Fiat owned Alfa Romeo marques. When the convertible hits the streets in 2015, it will mark the mainstream return of the Alfa brand to the United States. At this point in time, the two companies are under the assumption that the car will be built at Mazda’s Hiroshima, Japan assembly plant. Even though they will be manufactured together, each variant will be distinct to its brand name and thus, independent development of design and engines will take place.

“It is especially exciting to be collaborating with such a prestigious marque as Alfa Romeo on a new roadster based on the next-generation MX-5, which is such an iconic vehicle for Mazda and recognized as the best-selling roadster of all time.” said Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda’s Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO.
