Of the fifty states that comprise the U.S., Mitsubishi gave Hawaii the first opportunity to taste the American-spec i-MiEV. Now that the least expensive fully electric vehicle is reaching nationwide status, the automaker is out to make its EV simply simple and one step in doing so is through quick chargers. Just as before, Hawaii will be one of the first to sample a variety of systems such as the all-new ultra-fast DC quick charger built and developed by Mitsubishi and Eaton. In no time at all, EV owners on the island of O’ahu will be able to get up to 80 percent full in under 30 mins.
“Thanks to the cooperation of the State of Hawaii and Eaton Corporation, Hawaiian residents and visiting tourists driving 100% electric-powered vehicles like the 2012 Mitsubishi i will soon have an ever-expanding and easy-to-use electric vehicle charging network that’s also extremely cost-effective when compared to gasoline alternatives,” said Yoichi Yokozawa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America. When the system becomes fully operation at the Ko Olina Resort, it will be fully opened to the public and to any EV with a CHAdeMO-compliant quick charging port. It will also be the first of many Eaton quick chargers to be installed in Hawaii by Volta Industries. With the help of Mitsubishi, the distributor outfit plans on pumping out several dozen systems by the end of year, four of which are currently being prepped for installation. These chargers will all be made 100 percent available to any member of the public.
