One of the major homes to the X family line of BMW utilities will soon receive an extra boost. Across the next three years, approximately $900 million will be put into the Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly plant to make way for a X-Series expansion. Last year, the German namesake produced 276,065 for more than 130 global markets at the U.S. plant. A solid number of those vehicles were X3s, the latest addition to Spartanburg’s production after a $750 investment was made in 2008. BMW is looking to beat 2011’s production number and has already set themselves a solid goal.
“This will create 300 new jobs by the end of this year. This will allow us to produce 350,000 units in Spartanburg in the mid term,” said Frank-Peter Arndt, member of the Board of Management for BMW. The South Carolina plant exports many of its vehicles to other nations. In 2011, more than 70 percent of its vehicles were sent around the globe. With the announcement of another X-Series vehicle in the future, the X4, the expansion is a wise decision that will benefit more than just BMW. “BMW has once again provided tremendous evidence that South Carolina is a blueprint for significant economic development success. The partnership between this company and our State is an enduring example of how to attract, retain and grow business to stimulate perpetual job creation,” said Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina.
