Even though it has only been out for a few months, the all-new Chevrolet Sonic sub-compact is being recalled. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain cars may have been built without an entirely complete braking system. The inner or outer pad for the front brakes might not be present, giving the calipers only one pad to work with. A missing brake pad could spell disaster by greatly diminishing stopping performance.

In total and as of now, 4,296 2012 model year Sonics are being affected. The cars being recalled were manufactured from June 2 through November 21, 2011. Chevrolet will begin notifying specific owners of the issue on or around January 14, 2012. Certified dealers will inspect the car’s brakes and if anything is missing, they will replace both pads, the caliper and rotor with all new parts. This remedy will occur at no extra cost to drivers.
