The first and only mass-produced electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF, is officially one year old. So far, the completely zero emissions car has found more than 19,000 homes globally since its first sale on December 11, 2010. As its market share expands each and every day, the LEAF has racked up approximately 35 million miles driven around the world. Most recently, Guangzhou China received a set of fleet LEAFs via a joint venture between Nissan and Dongfeng Motor Co. It appears that Nissan’s EV expansion isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
With nearly 20,000 cars quietly rolling around the globe, Nissan has managed to actually reduce C02 emissions worldwide. 7,300 tons have been cut back because of LEAF purchases compared to conventional vehicles. Owners are even using these cars as their every day vehicle too as the average daily commute for LEAFs is almost 40 miles. With an average charge time of about three hours and development of quick charging systems gaining pace, the EV might have a chance after all.
