In 1990, General Motors’ now defunct Saturn brand called Spring Hill Tennessee home. That held true until 2007 when the name was sold and the Chevrolet Traverse was manufactured at the plant until 2009. Now, GM will be investing $61 million in order to breathe life back into the middle Tennessee facility. Blame for the restart can be put on the Chevrolet Equinox as Spring Hill will be supplementing the vehicle’s Canadian home. When operations fully begin during the second half of 2012, 594 hourly and 91 salaried positions will be created. After the Equinox work starts, GM will also invest $183 million for future midsize vehicles. That expansion should offer 1,090 hourly and 106 jobs. Official word on the second investment’s timing has yet to be announced.
“Spring Hill has a history as one of GM’s most innovative and flexible plants,” said Cathy Clegg, vice president of GM Labor Relations. “We’re pleased that, working together with the UAW, we were able to build on that history and develop a plan to resume production at Spring Hill.”
