Fuel prices are high: that’s a fact. As the price continues to increase so do the chances of fuel theft. More and more reports of fuel siphoning are being see all across the nation and there is no doubt that more cases will appear in the future. Ford has taken this problem into consideration as they have engineered their next models with a siphon deterrent.
“Our first goal is to make the refueling process as easy and trouble-free for the customer as possible,” said Brian Aitken, supervisor for Ford Fuel Systems. “Unless they understand how the mis-fueling inhibitor works and come prepared, many would-be fuel thieves are unsuccessful in siphoning fuel from Ford vehicles.”
Ford cars and trucks come with a capless fuel filler called Easy Fuel. A spring-loaded flapper door eliminates any unscrewing of a fuel cap and a special mis-fueling inhibitor makes siphoning almost impossible. Straight from Ford’s press release; “The inhibitor consists of a fuel nozzle detector that guides the nozzle to the opening. If a nozzle or foreign tube of a different size – a diesel nozzle or plastic hose, for example – is placed in the filler neck of a gasoline-powered vehicle, the latches will not release.”
For the ultimate security, all Ford vehicles can be purchased with a lockable fuel cap.
