General Motors’ luxury division, Buick will make even more of an impact for the 2012 model year. All engines featured under the prestigious hoods of Buicks will be direct injected making the maker the only brand to be exclusively powered by such a technology. This not only improves fuel economy across the model line but power as well.

“The 2,200 pounds per square inch of pressure that feeds the injectors provides a more atomized and precisely metered fuel spray to each cylinder before every combustion event,” said Ecotec chief engineer Mike Anderson. The Ecotec that will be featured in the upcoming 2012 Regal GS will achieve 270 horsepower for its 2.0 liters of displacement heavily in part due to direct injection. High pressure fuel injectors erupt directly into the combustion chambers eliminating loss due to travel through a manifold. “Spraying fuel directly into the combustion chamber reduces the temperature of the compressed mixture as the fuel evaporates, which enables a higher-compression ratio, allows for more spark advance, and reduces fuel consumption” said Anderson.
