Nissan America has been operating in the state of Tennessee for 30 years, starting with the Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in 1981. After the ground broke, it has been smooth sailing ever since and recently Nissan has decided expand even more. Installation has begun on 30 solar-assisted charging stations at both the Smyrna plant and Franklin headquarters. “These solar-assisted charging stations demonstrate our dedication to a zero-emissions society, and our dedication to bringing innovation to our home in Tennessee,” said Carlos Tavares, chairman of Nissan America.

The solar-powered stations reduce the strain on power grids and thus, save electricity. They use the same lithium-ion battery cells that can be found on the Nissan LEAF, the vehicle these stations will service. These stations will work together with the LEAF’s battery factory, which is 75 percent towards being finished. “Nissan in the coming year will expand our manufacturing presence, enhance our philanthropic efforts and make new additions to our headquarters operations, all in Tennessee,” said Tavares.
