Truck lovers the world over are rejoicing, GM has finally pulled the wraps of the next-generation Sierra and Silverado pickups.

The trucks are powered by three new EcoTec3 engines and six-speed automatics with automatic grade braking. The new mills all feature direct injection, variable valve timing and increased compression ratios. No word yet on power outputs of fuel economy numbers but GM says they will all be higher than currently available, so that is good.

The exterior of the trucks has been redesigned in subtle but effective ways to create what GM calls the quietest cabins in the class. The new shape decreases drag and wind noise, so the design should help boost fuel numbers also. More intelligent design decisions include the inclusion of front-hinged rear doors on extended cab trucks. Off-road fans will be pleased to hear the return of the mighty Z71 package with obligatory Rancho shocks and front tow hooks.

The inside sees some of the largest alterations with a completely new interior that focuses on soft-touch materials. Set in the gauge cluster is a new 4.2-inch color information display, and the IntelliLink with 8-inch color touchscreen is also available. The trucks also benefit from some of the trick safety equipment from the Cadillac XTS like the Driver Alert Seat.

All together the new trucks represent a solid showing for General Motors and look to give the competition a tough fight for supremacy. We can’t wait to get a set of keys.
