“Total Vehicle Performance.” As it gets ready to strut into Infiniti showroom floors spring 2012, the IPL G Convertible will carry with it the motto that has built the brand’s newly formed performance division. Slatted to join the already available IPL G Coupe, the drop top version will be the second product of the Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) tuning outfit. Every aspect of the impressive G Convertible has been touched by IPL to create, as Infiniti puts it, a serious challenger to the ultra-high cost sports series. “IPL pushes the premium performance envelope for buyers seeking a higher level of exclusivity and driving exhilaration, but does so with an Infiniti twist,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore.

“Like every Infiniti, the new IPL G Convertible takes a different path from its established competitors, with its retractable hardtop that is designed to look as good with the top up as down. It’s a terrific addition to the Infiniti Performance Line, taking the dramatic Infiniti G Convertible to an even higher level,” continued Poore. Starting with the G Convertible as the base, IPL adds in exclusive body parts all around, new 19 inch wheels, a lower and stiffer suspension, special engine tuning and tops it off with a uniquely appointed interior. The 3.7 liter, DOHC VQ37VHR V6 produces 343 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque in IPL trim. That’s 18 horsepower and six lb-ft increase over the standard G Convertible and is made possible by a recalibrated engine management system and a IPL high-flow dual exhaust delivering a 30 percent reduction in exhaust pressure. Power has been raised to peak at a rather high 7,400 rpms to encourage VQ singing while torque was tuned to peak and stay strong at around 5,000 rpms. Matched to the IPL V6 is Nissan’s seven speed automatic with manual shift mode. Unchanged from the base G cars, this transmission features rev matching downshifts and a quick shift sport mode.

To offer a sharper feel, the IPL Convertible is overall stiffer in its suspenders compared to the base G. The front spring rates have been increased by 14 percent while the rear jump up by four percent. The stabilizer bars have been pumped up as well, increasing six percent in the front and a massive 125 percent in the rear. In order to make sure the IPL stops, 14 inch front and 13.8 rear brakes were added while the steering gear was retuned for faster turn in. Sunken lower, the IPL features sharp and angular body lines which are most prominent around the rear. Like the base car, the IPL isn’t flashy at all and subtlety is still the name of the game. Making sure that the philosophy of mystery stays, only two colors will be offered: Moonlight White and Malbec Black.

Inside the IPL Convertible, red stitching and unique badges are scattered throughout. Exclusive front seats with manual thigh extension and driver’s power torso and thigh support adjustment are added as well as aluminum trimming for the footrests and pedals. Offered in two colors, Stone and a IPL-exclusive Monaco Red, the inside offers every technology piece found on the standard G such as the Bose Open Air stereo and seven inch navigation screen. The 2013 IPL G Convertible will be offered in one trim level with no options. “With it’s pure IPL style and performance, and the added dimension of open-air motoring, the IPL G Convertible is a welcome addition to the Infiniti Performance Line lineup,” said Poore.
