During the 2012 New York International Auto Show, a group of automotive journalists got together for another year so that the best “World Car” could be determined. Eventually, the finalists were narrowed down to a select group of three and after a bit of deliberation, a winner was crowned. It may have only been around since December, but the 2012 Volkswagen Up! has made enough of an impact to be named World Car of The Year 2012.
“This award shows once again that in the up!, our designers and engineers have created a vehicle that has been thought through in minute detail. A vehicle that sets standards in its class for efficient use of space, safety, motoring fun and environmental compatibility,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. The Up!’s latest accolade can be added to its already impressive trophy case. Since its debut, the little, 3.54 meters long, VW has earned the top five point score from the Euro NCAP as well the evaluation outfit’s “Advanced Award” for the car’s emergency city braking. For being safe, efficient and space-saving, the 2012 Volkswagen Up! was recognized as being the ultimate offering in what is truly a hard segment to strive in: World Cars.
